A 12-volt battery consists of six 2-volt cells. A fully charged cell is ~2.15V; fully discharged is ~1.9V. A fully charged 12V battery measures ~12.9V, while a fully discharged battery measures ~11.4V. To calculate charge percentage:
Equation 1: % Charge = ((Measured Voltage – 11.4) / 1.5) × 100
This formula works best when the battery is at rest (not supplying power). For accuracy, let the battery rest for 24 hours before measuring.
2. How long does it take to charge a battery?
Recharge time = (Battery Capacity in Amp-Hours) ÷ (Charger Current in Amps)
Equation 2: Hours = (Amp-Hours ÷ Amps)
Example: A 50Ah battery with a 10A charger will take about 5 hours to reach ~80% charge. A full 100% recharge may take an additional 5 hours with a 3-step charger. A 4-step charger may recharge faster.
